Ritchie began a rich tradition about six years ago by organizing a hiking group that explores different trails on the island every week during late spring, summer, and early fall (otherwise we run out of sunlight too early to go after work). We traverse mountains, fields, and around lakes (sometimes in the summer we jump in for a swim). We've hiked in the snow, across bridges and train trusses, in caves, to waterfalls, and through swamps. Most commonly we are found hiking through a forest teeming with Douglas Fir trees, ready to come around the next corner, or climb the next peak to obtain some breath-taking view of a valley of trees or of city, or the ocean dotted with islands as far as the eye can see.
Some people call the hikes "death marches" (ahem, John Davis and Josh Price), but the rest of us know them simply as a refreshing tradition. Die hards include: Ritchie Smith, Lisa Lau, Jerek Meher, Douglas Fraser, Joshua Smith, Brent Grounds, Darcy Smith, and myself. Lots of other people make it when they can.
So as we approach the 6th season of hikes, I'd like to share some photos of past adventures, happily anticipating the good hikes that are to come this year.
